Configure shipping profiles
A shipping profile defines how you charge customers for delivery. It is one of the key configurations before launching your store.
- If your store uses the same shipping rules for all products, you only need to set up the General shipping profile.
- If you need specific shipping rules for certain products, create a Custom shipping profile.
Things to consider before configuration
Before configuring your shipping profile, keep the following in mind:
- Be familiar with the zones your store supports for delivery and set up appropriate shipping cost rules accordingly.
- The General shipping profile must be configured and cannot be disabled or deleted.
- A product (including product variants) can only be assigned to one shipping profile. If a product is added to a Custom shipping profile, it will no longer be available in the General shipping profile.
- If multiple products from different shipping profiles are included in the same order, the system will consolidate the shipping costs, which could result in higher fees at checkout.
Configure shipping profiles
This guide explains how to set up general and custom shipping profiles. The main difference is in the applicable products section—other steps are the same.
When you configure shipping for the first time, the system creates a default General shipping profile. Review and adjust it as needed. If you need special rules for certain products, create a custom profile after completing the basic setup.
Differences between general and custom shipping profile
Configuration item | General shipping | Custom shipping |
---|---|---|
Applicable products | Automatically applies to all products | Must manually select at least one product |
Priority | Can be overridden by custom shipping | Takes priority over general shipping |
Edit general shipping profile
Navigation: Settings -> Shipping and delivery.
The system automatically creates a default shipping profile that applies to all products. It includes:
- Fulfillment location: Default shop location (set during store creation). You can update this anytime under Settings → Locations.
- Shipping zone & rates: Based on the business area you selected during store setup (e.g., United States – Entire region).
- Rates:
- Economy – Free for orders over $50 (5–8 business days)
- Standard – $10 (3–4 business days)
- Express – $20 (1–2 business days)
You can edit rates, add new rules, or create additional zones as needed.
Create custom shipping profile
- Log in to the Genstore admin and go to Settings → Shipping and delivery.
- In the Shipping section, click to switch to the Custom shipping tab and click Create now.
- Enter a name for your custom shipping profile.
- Assign products to this shipping profile. Click Configure product to select which products should use this custom shipping rule. Only the products you choose will apply the rates defined in this profile.
- In the popup,
- Fulfillment locations: Select where orders will ship from. Only active locations configured under Settings → Locations will appear.
- Shipping to: Choose the region or country for this shipping rate. You can search and select specific countries or entire regions (e.g., North America).
- Shipping method, options include:
- Flat rate – A fixed price per order
- Rate by price – Based on order subtotal
- Rate by weight – Based on total order weight
- Rate by Quantity - Based on item count
- Shipping rates: Enter the amount customers will pay for this rate.
$0
indicates free shipping. - Rate name: Enter the name displayed to customers at checkout (e.g., Standard, Express).
- Description (Optional): Add estimated delivery time or any details (e.g., “Delivers in 3–4 business days”).
- Checkout preview: Shows how the shipping option will appear to customers during checkout.
- Click Save to complete the basic configuration.
TIP
Each product can only be linked to one custom shipping profile at a time.
To reassign a product, remove it from its existing profile first.
Add fulfillment locations
Use this option when you ship products from multiple locations and need to assign them to a shipping profile. For example:
- You have a warehouse in another state or country.
- You want to manage separate shipping rates based on the origin location.
TIP
- At least one active fulfillment location is required for shipping to work.
- Assign the correct location to ensure accurate shipping calculations.
Steps:
- In the General shipping profile (or a custom profile), click + Fulfillment locations.
- In the popup:
- Select one or more locations from the list.
- If the required location is missing, go to Settings → Locations to add and activate it.
- Click Save to apply the changes.
Add shipping zones and rates
Use this option when you need to expand shipping coverage or offer different rates for specific regions. For example:
- You want to start shipping to Canada in addition to the United States.
- You want to add a custom Express rate for a particular region.
Operation steps
Click the edit icon in the target shipping plan tab. Click + zone & rate under the target shipping fulfillment locations, and configure as follows:
- Ship to: Select at least one country or region. You can select multiple zones by checking the boxes.
TIP
- The General shipping profile will automatically set the store’s primary market country as the default shipping region.
- If the country you need is not listed, you can add it in Settings -> Markets.
- Each shipping profile allows only one set of shipping rules per country (including states/provinces).
- Shipping methods: You can configure one or more shipping rates for the region. Genstore offers five different rate calculation options. Select the one that fits your needs. The default rate currency is set to the store’s primary currency.
- Flat rate: Charge a specific amount for shipping, such as $10 per order. Note: The number of items does not affect the fixed shipping amount.
- Rate by price: Calculate shipping based on the total order value (excluding discounts, taxes, and fees).
- Rate by weight: Calculate shipping based on the total weight of the items in the order. If an item does not have a weight attribute, it defaults to 0.
- Rate by quantity: Calculate shipping based on the number of items in the order.
- Rate name: Name the rate. This name will be displayed to customers at checkout.
WARNING
If the order contains products from different shipping profiles, the shipping rates with the same name will be added together. For more on rate merging, see Rate consolidation.
- Description: Provide additional information about the shipping option. For example, if you offer two fixed shipping rates of $12 and $24, you can:
- write in the $12 rate description:
Standard shipping: 3–4 business days
- write in the $24 rate description:
Express shipping: 1–2 business days
- write in the $12 rate description:
Delete zones and rates
To permanently delete a shipping zone and rate, locate the target shopping zone or rate, under Action, click ... -> Delete.
Note: Deleting a region and its rates may prevent customers in that region from placing orders.
